Poster design for Tableau D’Hôte Theatre’s Blackout, an original collaborative theatre piece about the infamous 1969 occupation of a Concordia University building in downtown Montréal by black students in protest of a professor’s racial discrimination.
The company was looking for an energetic, bold design that prominently featured the cast/creators. I used the iconic images of computer punch cards raining down onto the street from the actual event as inspiration (see news shots below), tracking down vintage sets of punch cards on ebay and then scanning them into my design. The background also features a texture from the Hall building facade, the actual building where both the occupation and the show’s performance took place. The tribal additions to the cast image we’re a collaborative addition by artist Kaylan Michael.
